VW Cabriolet CD Player

My wife Abby had a 1991 VW Cabriolet. It was a great little car and reliable.
Most of the series of pictures don't have captions, but someone wanted to see the dashboard pictures, so I quickly threw together this site.
This series of photos is of a CD player installation. Since the standard VW tape player is designed to work with special speakers, there was some extra work involved. I basically removed the amplifiers from the special speakers. This operation turned them into 'normal' speakers.

This is the CD player adapter from Crutchfield. I had to cut an extra hole in the top to allow access to a screw in the dashboard. The hole is shown in these images in the top of the adapter. It is necessary to preserve access to that screw in order to remove the dashboard trim to change instrument cluster lights.

Close up of the hole.

Another shot.

This is the ball peen hammer I used to flatten the edges of the hole.

That looks like the completed hole.

In this image the hole is not quite right. Notice the screw head, paritally covered up.

I have this sheet metal nibber that I used on the hole. Nibblers are a great idea, but this one is terrible.

The nibbler's jaws. This is not a good tool, but comes in handy now and then.

The enlarged hole.

Now we have full access to the screw.

This is what the CD player adapter looks like in the dashboard.

This is a whole series so you'll have a good idea how it should fit.
