FAQ 45
Question: I need to replace both heater channels. I have a welder and all other necessities to do the job. Do I need to pull the body from the pan before I replace them? What other tips can you give me on it. Answer: I don't know much about this. The body has to come off. I've seen some illustrations of the process in a 2 page tech article in one of the VW magazines. It's a big job, but doable. It might be easiest to replace the defroster flex tubes with the body off. I've done that with the body on, and it's a tight squeeze. I used that aluminium/mylar flex tube like people use between the fan shroud and heat exchangers. I secured mine with a big wire tie (zip tie). Don't forget to label all the wires as you pull them off. If you want to drop me a note when you are done, I'd love to hear how things work out.
